Its function, how to repair it, and how to keep it healthy!
Your skin barrier is the outer layer of the skin, specifically on your face for this matter, that protects your skin and acts as a defense from harmful external factors.
First- don’t worry- your skin barrier has always been, and always will be there! But, as we know, your skin is extremely important to take care of even when you think there is nothing affecting it. It’s important to care for your barrier because of the inevitable aging and fragility process it will face with time, as well as the different products you put on your face that will work with your skin in different ways. We want to do our best to help you support your skin, while it does its best to defend what’s underneath.
How to care for your skin barrier:
It’s simple! And if you are at all concerned, confused, or curious, our expert providers are here to offer you a complimentary assessment where they will educate you and build your customized skincare routine catered to your goals.
- Use gentle cleansers suited for your skin type (dry, oily, sensitive)
- Exfoliate gently and only 1-4 time per week depending on your skin
- Don’t overuse solely active-ingredient skincare products, like retinol or AHA – balance these with gentle moisturizers and the schedules you apply them
- Use SPF every day, even if you’re inside or if it’s cloudy outside! There are still harmful exterior factors that touch our skin, and a Broad Spectrum SPF is the number one product to support you
Signs your skin barrier is damaged:
It happens; sometimes we over-exfoliate, or our skin goes through a phase that’s asking for help and it’s going to show you by appearing:
- Dry or flaky
- Red or irritated
- Itchy or inflamed
No worries! If you need to get your skin on the healing journey, we recommend using gentle products, and a lineup of products curated to work well together.
At skinBe, our line of Obagi and skinBe skincare products are formulated to work together.
Begin to repair your skin barrier:
- Replenish your skin’s natural lipids by using our skinBe Lipid Drops to support your skin’s structure and repair
- Hydrate with the Obagi Hydrate [and try out Obagi Hydrate Luxe, a heavier night cream]
An unexpected bonus to caring for your skin barrier:
Get a CO2 Laser Resurfacing or CO2Beglow treatment!
Yes- these treatments do use lasers to create micro-injuries on your skin, but this purposefully acts as the trigger your skin needs to begin immediately repairing itself. This repair process strengthens your skin even more than before, and it pushes out all of the dirt, oils, and toxins that were hidden deep under your skin– these are usually not pushed out until they feel like it on their own time!
