Both fillers and Botox are great treatments for anyone who is looking to turn back the hands of time and give their face a fresh, more youthful appearance. When trying to decide which option is best for you, one of the most important factors has to do with whether you want to treat dynamic or static wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are made only when your face moves a certain way. For example, you may only have crow’s feet around your eyes when you smile. Those are dynamic. However, static wrinkles are the lines and creases that are there even when your face is at rest. Those are static wrinkles and they are made over time.

 How Botox and fillers work

Botox and fillers are both injectables, but they work very differently. We decide which one to use by figuring out what kind of line or wrinkle we are fixing.

Botox is a neurotoxin. It works by blocking nerve signals that tell the muscles that cause your wrinkles to contract. For example, Botox is often used to treat the two lines between your eyebrows that most people refer to as their “11s”. It stops the muscle that causes those lines from contracting. You will still be able to move your eyebrows and it doesn’t cause you to lose your expressiveness, but those wrinkles don’t appear.

Fillers, on the other hand, do just what their name implies: They fill in the wrinkles. Static wrinkles sometimes appear because your skin isn’t producing as much collagen and elastin as it once did. Fillers help to plump your skin and smoothing away the wrinkles. Fillers can also help us to restructure the face and rebuild support that we lose as we age. Certain fillers can help us to mimic bone and fat pads that naturally fall or recede during the normal aging process. Replacing these structures in the face can help us rejuvenate and balance out certain areas, which can give you a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers can be used to treat a multitude of areas including cheeks, temples, lips, laugh lines, smile lines, jawline, and tear troughs.

Furthermore, there are also different types of fillers. Some last longer than others, and some are better for treating certain areas. The most important thing is to find an educated and experienced injector who knows exactly what filler is right for your specific treatment area and just how much filler you will need to give you your desired results.

Risks, longevity, and other considerations

Botox injections are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the world, and Botox has been in use for decades. It’s considered quite safe, particularly when administered by educated providers. Botox is the most well known neurotoxin on the market, but there are others and they’re not all the same. Make sure your provider is also educating you on the different types of tox she or he may have available for you so you can choose which one might be best for you.

All of the fillers we offer here at skinBe are FDA approved and are considered very safe for most people. One of the reasons it’s important to have an evaluation and customized treatment plan by your medical provider is that your personal medical history is unique to you, and you deserve a plan designed for your individual needs.

The effects of Botox injections range from 3-4 months. However, if you make them part of your regular anti-aging routine, you’re likely to avoid the need for more invasive treatments later on in life. Fillers, on the other hand, last longer than tox does, but they can vary anywhere from 6-12 months, depending on which filler was used and in what area of the face it was placed in.
