Unfortunately, acne is an extremely common skin condition among countless people. Though very common, it’s not something most people like to talk about since it can greatly impact one’s self confidence.

Acne is caused when hair follicles become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria, causing un-inflamed blackheads, inflamed pus-filled, tender bumps, and even cystic acne to appear on or under the skin.

There are 6 types of acne, all having different treatment options.

The first 2 types are whiteheads and blackheads.

They are forms of acne that are un-inflammatory and can oftentimes be the easiest to treat. These types of acne can be treated with products containing sulfur, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide which removes excess oil and buildup in the pores.

The other 4 types being papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts, are the inflammatory forms of acne which are the trickiest to treat.

Stronger, medical grade products like topical retinoids, or Tretinoin, are typically prescribed to aid in decreasing inflammation and getting rid of the tender, irritated bumps.

Retinoids are designed to create cellular turnover and get rid of any excess dead skin cells, which in time will decrease the chances of your pores being clogged and acne reappearing.

There are many other factors that can be the cause of acne breakouts aside from clogged pores.

Poor diets, stress, lack of exercise, dehydration, bacteria filled bed sheets or towels, and many more. Sugary, highly processed, fatty foods can cause hormonal imbalances causing acne breakouts. It’s essential for our bodies to be given nutritious, whole foods in order for hormone levels to stay in place.

Staying hydrated is something a lot of people look over when it comes to acne.

Dehydrated, dry, and flaky skin causes irritation within the pores and creates excess oil production, causing breakouts. Another large factor that goes into acne breakouts is bacteria trapped in bed sheets, pillow cases and towels. It is essential to wash sheets, pillow cases and towels at least once a week to get rid of trapped bacteria that causes painful and irritated pustules.

There are countless reasons for acne occurring, but there are simple steps you can take to decrease and prevent more breakouts from happening. It is crucial to cleanse your face every morning and night to get rid of excess dirt, oil, and dead skin. Refraining from touching your face is also important, as oil on your hands can cause acne to reappear.

Implementing a medical grade skincare regime is often suggested, as it is hard for acne to go away on its own. A cleanser, moisturizer, retinoid, and SPF are a few products that are essential in decreasing acne breakouts.

Though acne can make people self conscious, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Staying consistent with healthy lifestyles and a good medical grade skincare regime is key to acne prevention, and will make you regain your confidence in the long run!
